Review : The debut of the 2007 BMW 3 Series coupes and convertible is just around the corner so BMW finally let down its guard and released a few official photos. All we got were pics of the coupe, but with the convertible model switching to a hard top configuration it won't look much different. The big news for the 2007 BMW 330Ci convertible is a new three-piece retractable hardtop. With new hardtop convertibles like the 2006 Volvo C70 and 2007 Volkswagen Eos entering the segment, the 330Ci's new setup should help keep it competitive. The convertible is expected to use the same pair of 3.0-liter engines currently found throughout the 3 Series, Z4 and X5 lineups. Delivering 215 hp or 255 hp depending on their level of tune, the two straight sixes should have more than enough power to satisfy most convertible buyers. If you need more than a little wind in your hair to get excited about the 3 Series, the new 335Ci is the car to look for this summer. It will be the first application of the BMW's new twin-turbo, straight-six engine, a setup which delivers 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its 3.5 liters of displacement. Expect to see a retuned suspension, stronger brakes and bigger wheels and tires on the 335Ci as it's bound to be marketed as a high-performance alternative to the standard 3.0-liter models. An on sale dates for these new 3 Series models are hard to pin down. Their public debut will be sometime in the next several months, but we don't expect to see the coupe until later this year at the earliest with the convertible following sometime next spring.
Press Release : BMW is getting busy with a clutch of new convertibles and the next-generation X5 off-roader. These computer-generated images show how the crop of new cars from the manufacturer is likely to look. The X5 might not look very different from the current model, but it's an all-new car. The company isn't revealing any details just yet, but it's thought that the new X5 is bigger with a view to making it a seven-seater.
That will keep the BMW up with the likes of the Audi Q7 and new Mercedes GL, both of which have space for seven. We expect the new BMW to appear before the end of this year and go on sale early in 2007.
The 3 Series convertible will probably arrive on time for next year. Artists have used the recently unveiled coupe as a basis to show what the car will look like. It's still unknown whether BMW is going to use a fabric or a metal roof on the convertible, however.
Finally there's the M6 convertible. When the awesome 507bhp coupe version of the car was unveiled in December 2004, BMW wasn't sure whether it would produce a drop-top version. Now BMW is thought to be ready to unveil the car at the British Motor Show in London in July. Expect a 0-62mph time under five seconds and little change from £85,000
