We expect to see the Grande Punto for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show shortly before it goes on sale in left-hand drive. The Grande Punto will not hit the UK until early 2006. All engines at launch will conform to Euro 4 emissions and include two eight-valve petrol units: 1.2-litre (65bhp) and a new 1.4-litre with 77bhp; and no less than four turbodiesels: 1.3-litre 16v MultiJet (75bhp), or 1.3 MultiJet with a variable geometry turbine turbocharger (90bhp); and 1.9-litre MultiJet with either 120bhp or 130bhp.

“We’re putting the Q7 through just about every horror imaginable to a car driver,” says Martin Brand, Audi’s durability testing chief. The vehicle has survived everything from sub-zero cold to desert heat, along with performance testing on the Nürburgring. The 2007 Q7 makes its global debut next month in Frankfurt, and goes on sale in North America in mid-2006.



Panamera Flagship gets go ahead: Porsche confirms fourth model(8/3/2005)

After several years of deliberation, Porsche has confirmed plans to build a new four-door sports sedan, the Panamera. Conceived as a “four-door coupe” in the mold of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Bentley Flying Spur and a forthcoming Volkswagen model, the new Porsche joins the lineup in 2008 as a 2009 model.



Honda Builds a Better Civic: Still no double wishbones but a CRX is coming in two years(7/26/2005)

Most of the Civic lineup will have a new 1.8-liter four that will make more power and offer a 6 percent improvement in fuel economy. Honda says the 1.8 offers the acceleration of a 2.0-liter and the fuel economy of a 1.5-liter engine. The 1.8 uses improved i-VTEC, drive-by-wire and variable-length intake runners to achieve its increased performance. Peak power is 140 hp and peak torque is 128 lb-ft, though there are suggestions a 155- or 160-hp version could be coming.



Mazda to Add Diesel Option to New MX-5 Roadster(7/22/2005)

Mazda is about to spring a few surprises on its all-new MX-5 roadster, the car that replaces the much loved Miata. In addition to the standard 2.0-liter gasoline engine, Mazda is planning to add a high-performance diesel option. A Mazda spokesman told U.K. magazine Auto Express: "There are people working on high-revving diesel engines at the moment, and I can see us using one in the MX-5." The new MX-5 goes on sale in Europe in November and in the U.S. early next year. Mazda is planning a special numbered launch edition of the car to kick off sales.

Toyota Recalls 345,000 Sienna Minivans(7/22/2005)

Toyota Motor Co. has said it is recalling 345,000 Sienna minivans to repair seatbelts that may become difficult to retract when unbuckled. The recall covers vehicles from model-years 2004 and 2005. Toyota said it has received 14 complaints, but no reports of accidents or injuries. According to the company, the shoulder portion of the middle-row seatbelt may get stuck in a plastic guide. Customers will be notified beginning in mid-August.

New VW Jetta Wagon Will Be Built in Mexico(7/22/2005)

Volkswagen confirmed it will begin production of the next-generation Jetta station wagon at its massive assembly plant in Mexico late 2006. The all-new Jetta wagon, which also will be marketed in Europe as the Golf variant, will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2007, possibly as a 2008 model.

General Motors Posts $286 Million Loss(7/22/2005)

General Motors on Wednesday said it lost $286 million in the second quarter. The news jolted Wall Street analysts and investors, who were expecting the automaker to report a modest profit for the quarter. The loss compares with a year-earlier profit of $1.38 billion, and follows a staggering first-quarter loss of $1.1 billion.

Ford Announces New CEO for Jaguar and Land Rover(7/22/2005)

Ford Motor Company has announced Geoff Polites will take over double duty as CEO of both Jaguar and Land Rover. Polites, 57, is currently head of sales, marketing and service for Ford of Europe, according to Automotive News. His tenure as CEO goes into effect on September 1. Polites will be replacing Joe Greenwell, who will become the vice president of government affairs for the Premier Automotive Group and Ford of Europe.
