No More Mercedes / McLaren Road Cars?(8/9/2005)

Mercedes-Benz is considering building a sportier derivative of its SLR McLaren supercar. "Yes, we want that," said Klaus Nesser, CEO of Maybach and SLR, in an interview with Inside Line at a recent SLR promotional event in Le Castellet, France. The derivative could have such modifications as a lowered suspension, new tires and 10 to 20 more horsepower. Nesser referred to this project as a racecar, but one for "private entertainment" and not professional use.  First, he said, Mercedes must meet with SLR owners to discuss their wishes — a meeting that would take place either at the end of 2005 or in early 2006.

Obvio Minicar Taking Aim at North America(8/9/2005)

Obvio, also known as the Egg, is a new Brazilian minicar that will be exported to North America beginning in 2006. The Obvio project is the brainchild of a private company called Obvio! Automotiveiculos. It was initiated during the early 2000s, but production didn^t begin until early 2004. Although it is close in size to the Mercedes-Benz^s Smart city car — the length is a mere 104.3 inches — it is powered by a Tritec-sourced 1.6-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine.

DaimlerChrysler’s U.S. division unveiled two entry-level Jeeps that—ta da!—also sit atop the Caliber’s platform. Both the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass, below, debut at next month’s Frankfurt motor show. Each is a thinly veiled concept car ripe for market.

They carry distinct Jeep sensibilities with differing targets. Both new Jeeps are aimed at price segments below the current entry-level Wrangler model that starts at $18,730.

BMW of North America LLC will offer digital radios as a factory option in its 2006 7 Series models. The sedans go into production in the fall. "We are the first to offer HD radio in a production car," says BMW spokesman Bill Scully. Scully says digital radio - also known as high-definition or HD radio - has several advantages over analog in-car radio receivers. Digital radio receivers offer clearer reception. They also can display information such as weather, traffic, sports scores and stock reports.

Crash-avoidance systems are gaining support, but proving difficult to test(8/8/2005)

Devices intended to keep motorists out of crashes supposedly are the next big thing in automotive safety. But they are encountering a big speed bump. The problem: No one knows for sure how to test the effectiveness of such devices, says Adrian Lund, COO of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group for auto insurers. "Our electronics industry is in full gear, pedal to the metal" to sell crash-avoidance equipment, says Lund. But safety groups don^t know how much of a difference the devices will make, he contends.

The continued success of Ford’s red-hot Mustang is being noticed at General Motors. There has been talk reviving the Chevrolet Camaro as a competitor to Ford’s pony car. Mark Reuss, GM’s executive director of vehicle architecture and Performance Division, says his engineers are looking to develop a low-cost rear-wheel drive platform that makes good business sense.

Next month, at the Frankfurt Show we will get to see and sit in the final production version of the Peugeot 407 Coupe you see here. March^s Geneva Show saw the ^Prologue^ version and unsurprisingly there are few changes between that so called concept car and the production version. Specification levels and prices will be announced closer to the UK on sale date of January 2006, but we do know that Peugeot will only fit top-level engines to the 407 Coupe. The entry-level version is fitted with a 2.2-litre four-pot developing 160bhp.

Petrol options include a 105bhp 1.6-litre and 138bhp 1.8-litre. Topping the range will be the 197bhp 2-litre turbocharged unit, likely to be badged SRi. It is unlikely that a VXR version is made.
