TOKYO NEWS: Audi Harnesses Lambo Power for Flagship S8 Quattro
Audi is harnessing the power plant of sister company Lamborghini, tapping Lambo^s Gallardo supercar to power the new Audi S8 quattro. Audi^s flagship performance sedan will debut this month at the international auto show here.
The 5.2-liter, V10 gasoline engine, driving through a six-speed Tiptronic semiautomatic transmission, gives the S8 an output of 450 horsepower, a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-60-mph time of just over 5 seconds. The V10 engine is smaller and lighter than a comparable 12-cylinder unit. It has a slightly greater capacity than the Gallardo^s 5.0-liter engine and has Audi^s gasoline fuel-stratified-injection (FSI) system, and a balancing shaft for maximum engine refinement.
In line with A8 models, the S8 quattro features all-aluminum panels mounted on an aluminum space frame. The chassis combines adaptive air suspension with the latest-generation quattro permanent four-wheel-drive system, featuring a standard torque split of 40-60 (front-rear) that helps to optimize axle load distribution for even greater agility and steering precision.
The S8 is differentiated from the standard A8 by huge 20-inch S-design alloy wheels, V10 emblems on the wheel arches, aluminum-look door mirrors, a subtle boot spoiler and four tailpipes surrounded by a redesigned rear apron.
In Germany, the price of the new S8 quattro has been confirmed at $117,000. The official U.S. price will be announced later, and probably will be lower.
