Honda Raises the BAR to 100 Percent Ownership
Honda is moving from its engine supplier-partner role to full ownership of the BAR-Honda Formula One racing team.
The announcement comes the week prior to Honda^s home race, the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit. Honda, a 45-percent owner of the team, will acquire the remaining 55 percent from British American Racing (BAR).
The acquisition puts Honda on equal terms with its rival, Toyota, which began competing in F1 in 2002 with its own works team. Other manufacturers include BMW, Ferrari and Renault. BMW recently announced the end of its relationship as engine supplier to Williams, and purchased the Sauber team.
BAR was established in 1999, taking its name from its owner, British American Tobacco Co. The Lucky Strike cigarette brand has been its primary sponsor. Honda came on board as engine supplier in 2000.
Honda has a long history of participation in Formula One, including a stint from 1964 to 1968 as a constructor. More recently, it has been an engine supplier for teams such as Jordan, Lotus, McLaren and Williams.
The drivers for 2006 will be Rubens Barrichello, who moves from Ferrari and replaces Takuma Sato, and Jenson Button. The team will continue to be based in Brackley. Its name will be announced later, after sponsorship relations are confirmed.
