Earlier this year BMW announced the introduction of the first high-performance version of the accomplished 1-series. Prices and specification have now been announced for the 130i, and it has turned out even better than expected.

BMW has squeezed an extra 7bhp out of the straight-six engine to take peak power to 265bhp, more than any other six-cylinder BMW engine in production (leaving aside the BMW M3). Maximum torque has also been increased, from 221lb.ft to 232lb.ft. The increased output is mainly thanks to changes in air flow into the engine and revised cooling. The top speed of the 130i remains at an electronically limited 155mph, but the 0-62mph sprint time has reduced to just 6.1 seconds. Linked to a snappy six-speed manual ^box, in-gear acceleration should be the 130i^s forte, and no doubt it will make a wonderful noise when being extended. We^ve experienced this engine in the 330i and 630i and it is a peach.

The 130i will be available in two trim levels when it goes on sale in September. The 130i SE starts at £24,745 and the new M Sport specification 130i costs £26,515. M Sport is a new designation for BMW, and will be extended to the 3-series, 5-series and X3 ranges in due course. On the 1-series, the M Sport variants gain significant styling modifications including a lower front spoiler, sculpted side sills and a new rear apron. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard, with the option of 18-inch double-spoke items. The suspension also undergoes the M Sport treatment. Inside, the M Sport is fitted with half-leather sports seats, an M leather steering wheel and other unique touches.
