Volkswagen, Ford and Toyota Recall Vehicles in the U.S.
Volkswagen is recalling 39,583 2005 Jetta sedans in the U.S. because of a possible fuel leak that could start a fire, U.S. safety regulators said Thursday.
NHTSA also announced recalls involving 2006 Ford Expedition and 2006 Lincoln Navigators, as well as 2005 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks.
Volkswagen told the Associated Press it knows of no deaths or injuries related to the Jetta defect, which was reported to the company by a small number of owners.
"We don^t know of any fires whatsoever because of this, but we think it is important to act quickly and reassure new Jetta owners about our commitment to their safety and satisfaction," Len Hunt, VW^s executive vice president, said in a statement.
According to the NHTSA, a fuel-supply-line clamp may not be properly positioned in the 2005 Jettas, which could lead to a leak.
NHTSA said Ford is recalling 10,061 Expedition and Navigator SUVs from the 2006 model year because tires on the driver side may be damaged, which could lead to a tread separation and crash. The damage was caused by a sharp piece of steel the tires may have encountered during manufacturing.
Toyota is recalling 11,592 2005 Tacoma pickups with bench seats in the U.S. NHTSA said the seatbelt-buckle sensor may not function as designed, which could cause the airbag to deploy improperly in a crash.
