Volvo Tackles World Poverty in Sponsorship of Live 8 Music Event
Volvo Cars of North America said Monday it has signed on as a sponsor for Live 8, the July 2 global event to raise awareness for ending poverty in the world^s poorest nations.
Billed as "The Long Walk to Justice" and organized by Sir Bob Geldof, who founded Live Aid in 1985, Live 8 will include free public concerts held in Philadelphia, London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Edinburgh and Toronto. The concerts will feature performances by Sir Paul McCartney, U2, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews Band and Coldplay. The event calls on members of the G8 Summit to drop the debts owed to them by the world^s 18 poorest countries.
Volvo joins AOL and Nokia as the event^s largest sponsors.
Volvo will broadcast six commercials during a Live 8 special telecast on ABC-TV from 8 to 10 p.m. on July 2. The Swedish automaker will also provide artist transportation at the London and Philadelphia shows. In addition, the company has signed on to be one of the presenting sponsors of the DVD release of the event, set for distribution in November.
